Dear Years 7, 8 and 9 Families,
The following changes have been made to the achievement of the HSC from 2020.
Our students will continue to be supported in their class lessons to ensure they achieve their best and are fully prepared for these tests.
If you have any concerns, please contact your daughter’s class teacher directly.
Although this information is focused on Year 9 students, this information is also relevant to years 7 & 8 for when they complete the NAPLAN tests.
Practise questions are available online at https://hscliteracynumeracy.nesa.nsw.edu.au/ and English and Maths teachers will provide plenty of opportunity for practise of these types of questions.
Please note – the minimum standard is NOT a Band 8, you will find that the content of the questions is not the same difficulty as Band 8 expectations.
Stronger HSC Standards
On 19 July 2016 the former Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli, announced reforms to the HSC, which will be implemented for Year 11 students in 2018 and Year 12 students in 2019.
This reforms include the introduction of a Minimum Literacy and Numeracy Standard. From 2020, Year 12 students must reach a minimum standard of functional literacy and numeracy for the award of the HSC credential.
From 2020, students need to demonstrate a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy to be eligible for the HSC. Students can demonstrate they have met the standard by achieving a pass in online reading, writing and numeracy tests. These tests will be available from 2018, and students will have multiple opportunities to sit them in Years 10, 11 and 12.
Students who achieve a Band 8 or above in Year 9 NAPLAN reading, writing and numeracy tests from 2017 will prequalify for the minimum standard and will not need to sit the online tests. No student will be prevented from sitting for the HSC on the basis of their NAPLAN results.
For clarification, the following points explain the relationship and detail the multiple opportunities students have to meet the standard.
