Tony Jones

Who said Maths is boring…certainly not our Director of Teaching and Learning, Maths guru and a Featured Teacher @ NEGS, Mr. Tony Jones. Armed with his “little motivational” barrel of chocolates, Tony, with his friendly and humorous personality has put fun into the Maths classes of NEGS, which in turn has left students motivated and eager to learn.

Teaching is a family affair for the Jones family. Tony’s father was a teacher, his wife Felicity is a teacher at Armidale City Public School, his uncle was a School Principal, and many of his cousins are teachers. One of Tony’s aunts, Margaret Waters, was even a teacher at NEGS.

Tony loves living in Armidale with his wife and three children and feels that Armidale is a great place to raise a family. He considers himself a ‘local’ as his grandparents moved to Armidale in the 1930’s with his grandfather being the first accountant of the University of New England. Whilst born in Armidale, Tony’s family moved to Canberra and then spent two years on Christmas Island, where his father was a Primary School teacher, before returning to Canberra and then back to Armidale.

Tony was educated at Armidale City Public School and Armidale High School and then went on to study at the University of New England after receiving a teaching scholarship. After University he commenced his teaching career at Barraba, returning back to Armidale to take up a position at Duval High School, where he taught for 18 years and became the Head Teacher for Mathematics.

In 2017 Tony made the move to NEGS as the Director of Teaching and Learning. “I have loved the experiences that I have had since joining the staff at NEGS and I have developed some wonderful relationships with the students here,” said Tony.

He still loves teaching Mathematics and enjoys seeing the girls develop their confidence with the subject although some extra motivation by the distribution of chocolates has been required on occasion! An impressive musician, Tony has shared his love of music with the NEGS community, playing his trumpet at Anzac Day and Remembrance Day Services, as well as in the recent school musical and Carol services. A keen sportsman, he enjoys cricket and golf, but is willing to have a go at anything, even donning a bib for the annual ‘Cambridge Cup’ Netball match between Staff and Year 12 students, where this year, the Teachers were the champions!

“I love the community feel of NEGS, where every student is known and where their welfare and education are our top priorities. Girls here are not just another face in the crowd and I think that is so important.”
