A warm welcome back to all parents, teachers and students for Term Two 2018. I trust everyone enjoyed the break and is looking forward to another busy term. As we start back in our Winter Uniform I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the school Uniform Policy.
As usual we have an action-packed Term. Last week we had our Mothers’ Day celebration with the Junior school students art works being displayed, and we had our K-12 Anzac Day Service. We also have our music groups performing at the Armidale Eisteddfod. The K-12 Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday, June 15th and parents are more than welcome to attend. NAPLAN testing for Years 3 & 5 occurs Week 3 and 4 from May 15 – 23. We will also be holding a Twilight music concert on May 29th and the NEGS Winter Ball on June 16th.
This term we also have a change to our timetable. This term we will be trialing a new sports program (separate from weekend sport) where students will participate in a chosen sport activity for 6 weeks (Hockey, Rugby or Athletics). We will have specialist coaches coming in each week to run these programs. This gives an opportunity to students who may want to learn new skills or give more practice to already learnt ones. This will run each Friday from 2:15 – 3:15. Due to this we have moved our fortnightly assembly to Monday morning 8:50 – 9:15. All students who play weekend sport for NEGS will be given the chance to be Captain for a weekend and will then present a short report at the assembly. This is to encourage the students to take a leadership role and to practice standing up and presenting in front of a crowd. We will also be starting a new initiative brought forward from Coco Loughrey in Yr 2. Once a month we will have a book club running at lunch time where students who are interested can sit in a group and have some books read to them by senior girls or old NEGS students.
I would also like to give a warm greeting to our new students and families and welcome them to the NEGS Junior School family.

Harriett Lisle commenced as a Year 2 student in the last few weeks of Term 1.
Years 5/6 in the last week of term were lucky enough to have a tour upstairs of the Horbury Hunt building (above Transition) to see the progression of our new learning support and OC (Opportunity Classroom), this will also include the Coding / STEM room. We are excited once gyprocking is complete to start taking classes up and utilising this new area. The New Dance studio in the music centre is also near completion with walls being removed and mirrors and ballet barres being added.
Finally I would like to thank the P&F for resources towards our new Coding / Stem room. The P&F are purchasing drones which student can learn to code to fly around obstacles as well as picking up objects. Sphero SPK+ coding balls a Lego Mindstrom EV3 technics base kit which allows students to build their own programable robots and a portable 3d printer. To be able to start our new program with such wonderful equipment is fantastic. For parents who are unsure what coding is or the capability of these product can do I encourage you to go onto You Tube and look them up.
