There is a definite groove at NEGS in the Performing Arts building. With our experienced and dedicated staff, NEGS music has been taken to another level. From Melbourne to Italy, music teacher and band director Alastair Finco has brought much experience to NEGS since coming to the School in 2018. For Alastair the wonderful part of teaching at NEGS is being being part of a collaborative music team and being able to give each student as much time as they need in order to be genuinely supported with their needs. Alastair’s favourite things to teach are composition, creative group work and exploring the music of upcoming artists. “The energy and professionalism the girls bring to their studies in both the classroom and the band programs at NEGS is inspiring”, said Alastair.
Alastair specialised in the French Horn at the Conservatorium Of Music in Verona, but also plays the trumpet, guitar, piano and vocals. Growing up in Melbourne he was the only member of his family who played music. Originally Alastair started playing the tenor horn in his school brass band and went on to become a member of the Melbourne Youth Orchestra. It was hard work but worth it when he was awarded Champion Tenor Horn player of Victoria in the Under 18’s category.
After school Alastair studied at the Victorian College of Arts and the Conservatorium of Music in Verona which lead him to work as a freelance performer in Australia and Europe. Studying music has seen Alastair travel all over the world and offered him many varied opportunities such as performing with Peter Andre on ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’, running a kitchen in Italy, playing with a salsa band and performing in ‘Opera In The Paddock’.
Outside of teaching Alastair was recently part of the UNE SMART Region Incubator “Emerge” 2019 Program helping him with his business Black Finch Music. Black Finch Music is an online sheet music service that hires Australian composers to create music which caters for a wide range of diverse needs. This is particularly directed at Band Teachers and Music Directors, but is also designed for the wider community.
Alastair also regularly performs with the Armidale Symphony Orchestra, The New England Big Band, The Ventus Wind Quintet and musicals around town.
