The sporting program in the NEGS Senior School is compulsory for all students therefore we offer a range of competitive and non-competitive sporting opportunities, allowing girls to select sports based on their personal interests. This helps promote physical health, commitment and discipline, as well as growing a sense of comradery and team spirit which is attained on the field, pitch and court. To encourage and foster a love of sport the coaches create sporting teams where there is a demand.
There’s plenty of competitive opportunities both on campus, in Armidale, around the region and at state and national levels. This opens up the door to making new friends from schools across New South Wales and the chance to practise performing and competing at new levels with metropolitan schools.
Our girls play within the Independent Girls’ Schools Sporting Association (IGSSA), taking up the mantle against a variety of schools around the state in a number of sporting carnivals and events in Hockey, Netball, Athletics, Swimming and Cross Country. Each year NEGS students travel to compete in the City2Surf and Hawkesbury Canoe Classic.
Summer Sport
During Terms 1 and 4 NEGS offers a variety of sports which vary year to year. Each term the sports that are offered are tailored to student interests and are changed to ensure all our students have a chance to find a sport they are passionate about. Sports that have been offered include rowing, F45 fitness training, parkrun, swimming, indoor rock climbing, indoor hockey, fullbore and smallbore rifle shooting, boxing, basketball and touch football.
Winter Sport
During winter our major sports include hockey, netball and rugby 7s. The hockey and netball teams compete in the IGSSA representative competition and the rugby 7s compete in the Australian School Girl Rugby Competitions. We also offer sports such as basketball, yoga, fullbore and smallbore rifle shooting and F45 fitness training.
Talented Athlete Program
The NEGS Talented Athlete Programs (TAP) have been established to assist talented student athletes to achieve at the highest levels of performance in their chosen sport; and to help them with their personal, educational and holistic development. The program provides direct pathways to sporting success through the establishment of our key partnerships with Hockey NSW, Netball NSW, NSW Rugby and the University of New England. TAP has a flow-through effect for everyone at the school, creating a culture of sporting excellence.
We want all of our girls to understand the importance of work-life balance and we have built in a nutrition and sports psychology component of the program that will see experts visiting to provide education sessions.
Strength and Conditioning
At NEGS we have a dedicated and experienced Strength and Conditioning Coach. Strength and conditioning is the practical application of sports science in order to optimise physical performance, enhance movement quality and reduce the risk of injuries. In order to achieve these targets our coach implements a training plan that is based upon evidence-based research as well as range of testing that assesses the athlete’s physical capabilities, biomechanics and mental capacity. This in turn means that all of the interventions implemented are personalised to each individual’s needs. The goal is to help students to achieve their personal bests through developing stronger bodies and minds.
