International Students

New England Girls’ School welcomes students from other countries, from Year 5 to Year 12 as day students or boarders. Coming to a new country can be strange and different, but at NEGS the friendly staff, beautiful surrounds and endless opportunities make the transition a smooth one. Our international students are encouraged and helped to integrate fully into school life. NEGS offers ESL support across the curriculum, particularly in the Senior School. Our ESL teachers are highly experienced and monitor carefully the progress of each student.

Students who require intensive English instruction are catered for with extra English lessons on our campus. Our international students participate in a range of leisure and social activities, including picnics, international dinners, organised sports and homestays, which allow them to experience Australian culture in a family environment.

English Language Proficiency Requirement

International students whose first language is not English and have been studying in Australia for less than one year, will be required to sit an English assessment with Australian Education Assessment Services (AEAS) to show evidence of their English competency. NEGS does not offer conditional places. An AEAS must be submitted before a place can be offered.

All costs associated with AEAS testing are to be paid by the family/student. Please refer to the AEAS website www.aeas.com.au for indicative costing and a description of the testing. AEAS is the only recognised testing procedure used by NEGS for students currently studying overseas. An English course may be required if the required level of proficiency is not met, followed by reassessment through AEAS.

In order for the application of an international student to be accepted at NEGS, the following levels of English proficiency MUST be reached:

  • Years 10–12 – Advanced Level above 80%
  • Years 7–9 – Pre-Advanced Level above 71%
  • Years 4–6 – Intermediate Level above 46%

*Applicants for Years 4 to 6 who do not meet the English language proficiency requirement prerequisites set out in the table above will not be refused enrolment on this criterion alone. However, if such a student is offered enrolment at NEGS, the Parent will be required to pay, prior to commencement, an additional one full term’s tuition fee. This fee provides for intensive English language instruction, provided by the School over the coming academic year.

International Student School Fees

Overseas Students studying on a 500 Student Visa are charged Overseas Students school fees, as the school does not receive government subsidies for these students.

International Students on Permanent or Temporary Resident visas, are charged the same school fees as Australian Citizens.
