Athlete Development Program

Our Athlete Development Program nurtures young athletes to reach their sporting potential through personalised coaching, structured strength and conditioning, and tailored pathways to success.

A Holistic Pathway for Aspiring Athletes

The ADP Program aims to develop, assist and nurture non-elite, talented and committed young female athletes along the pathway to pre-elite success in their chosen sport.

With a focus on nurturing the growth of elite athletes through a holistic and individualised approach while embracing the school values of excellence, responsibility, integrity and teamwork.

The program supports students across their chosen sports and is supported by our State sporting organisations – Hockey NSW, NSW Rugby, Netball NSW and partnerships with the University of New England.

What’s Included in the Program

The NEGS Sporting scholarships aim to provide financial support to students excelling in their chosen sport, acknowledging the significant cost to families associated with travel and supplies for students competing at representative levels.

Through the Daily Training Environment framework, there is a progression through growth, maturity, expectation and results-based success of these young athletes as they develop through their pathway.

The program consists of the following components:

Qualified coaches will assist athletes in developing their technical and tactical competence. Athletes will be provided with:
  • Weekly team training sessions; and
  • 1 small group coaching session per week with the specialist coaches. Students in Years 9 and 10 will complete the small group sessions during the school day using a subject line specifically for athletes within the program. Identified students in Years 7 and 8 will have the opportunity to complete the small group sessions after school, and Years 11 and 12 students will complete the sessions before or after school.

A qualified strength and conditioning coach will assist athletes in improving speed, strength, power, agility, balance, flexibility and reduce the likelihood of injury. Athletes will be provided with:

  • Comprehensive fitness testing;
  • 1 – 2 strength and conditioning sessions per week with options to increase;
  • Individualised training programs. Based on the aforementioned fitness testing, each student will receive personalised training to maximise their athletic performance; and Students in Years 9 and 10 will complete strength and conditioning sessions during the school day using a subject line specifically for athletes within the program.

Students in Years 7 and 8 will complete the strength and conditioning sessions after school, and Years 11 and 12 will complete the sessions before or after school.

Qualified professionals will assist athletes in developing their knowledge, understanding and skills related to recovery techniques, injury prevention and management, nutrition, sports psychology, anti-doping, media and public relations, etiquette and time management.

Athletes will be provided with one education session per term.

Athletes will receive an individualised plan each semester that identifies athlete strengths and areas for improvement. The plan focuses on the following key elements: technical preparation, tactical preparation, physical preparation and mental preparation.

Athletes will be provided with one individual Athlete Plan per semester.

Athletes will be provided with:
  • High-performance camp – Athletes will attend 1 high-performance camp each year to learn from coaches and athletes performing at the highest level.
  • Representative pathway – Athletes will be supported to progress along the NSW representative pathway for their sport.
  • Athletes will be provided with:

Journey Through the Program

NEGS ADP is a space where we can offer a great opportunity for athletes to set and achieve goals, develop physically and mentally, and create a strong emphasis on striving for excellence in their particular sporting field.

This program starts as early as Junior School where we are implementing a Junior Athlete Program — the starting blocks of skill development. This is not selective. All students are offered sessions with high-level coaches across hockey, netball, and rugby throughout the year. Girls are assessed in a non-formal way to identify emerging athletes as they move into Senior School.

Students in Years 7 and 8 who are identified as emerging athletes in their chosen sport are invited to participate in year-round training sessions. These sessions include fitness, conditioning, nutrition, psychology, mindset, movement, and specialist coaching with experienced coaches in their field.

In Years 9 and 10, athletes are allocated 5 timetabled periods per cycle to focus on the ADP. They also participate in all external sessions available to younger students.

During this stage, students are expected to gain coaching and officiating qualifications. The program introduces physiological and performance testing across the five components of fitness:

  • Cardiovascular endurance
  • Muscular strength
  • Muscular strength
  • Body composition
  • Flexibility

As well as skill-related components, including speed, agility, and overall conditioning.

In the final years of school, athletes take on a leadership role within the program. They’re supported and encouraged to become young women who pursue excellence with integrity and resilience.

NEGS fosters intrinsic motivation by embracing student goals and providing them with the tools, coaching, and environment to succeed at the highest level.
