Music and Arts
At NEGS, we believe that every child is born musical and deserves quality music teaching, be it in the classroom or in individual instrumental lessons.
Classroom music is taught by highly experienced specialists and based on student-centred approaches, enabling every child to achieve their personal best – be it in performance, improvisation or composition.
In addition to our classroom program, interested students can take individual lessons with expert instrumental lessons. We also offer a wide range of ensembles based on the students’ skills and interests.
Program Overview

Music At NEGS
Instrumental Music
NEGS offers a wide range of instrumental tuition through our Visiting Instrumental Program. Students may enrol in individual lessons for a variety of instruments including piano, violin, flute, guitar, and more.
Students are also encouraged to participate in instrumental ensembles and chamber groups. These experiences foster collaboration, performance confidence, and musical excellence across all levels.

Vocal and Choral Music
Vocal music plays a central role in the life of NEGS. All students in Junior School take part in choral activities, with opportunities continuing through to Senior School.
Choirs rehearse regularly and perform at school events, chapel services, and community functions. Vocal tuition is also available through the Visiting Instrumental Program for students who wish to develop their solo singing technique.
Discover Music at NEGS

Explore the Variety of Opportunities
Students at NEGS engage with music in a variety of ways — through classroom learning, private tuition, performance ensembles, and participation in festivals and community events.
Here are some ways that our students can stay involved at every level of their music journey.
Music is an integral part of the NEGS curriculum. All students from Kindergarten onwards participate in classroom music, which is taught by specialists and based on student centred approaches. Students perform, improvise and compose at an age appropriate level throughout.
NEGS offers Elective Music in Year 9 and 10, a course which is specifically designed to prepare students for the HSC Music Course offered in Year 11 and 12.
NEGS offers individual music tuition during school hours through its Visiting Instrumental Program. Lessons are available for a range of instruments including piano, violin, flute, guitar, and more. Students may also choose to sit AMEB or equivalent external music exams.
Students who take music in Year 9, 10 and for HSC are expected to take lessons on their primary instrument.

NEGS offers a wide range co-curricular ensembles, chamber groups, and choirs. These are formed around students’ needs and interests and perform regularly.
Music Elective and HSC students are expected to participate in ensembles to gain valuable skills and gain confidence.
NEGS students have numerous opportunities to perform throughout the year, including in assemblies, recitals, Chapel services, the Armidale Eisteddfod, Open Days and many more. These performances help develop stage confidence and celebrate student progress. Elective Music and HSC students are expected to perform on a regular basis.
NEGS offers Music Scholarships to students entering Year 7 and above. Applicants are required to audition and demonstrate musical potential. Scholarships offer part remission of tuition fees and provide further encouragement to talented and committed music students. For more information, visit our Scholarships Options page.
