Music and Arts

NEGS offers every student the opportunity to participate in music and performance from Kindergarten to Year 12. Our program embraces the creative, cognitive, and social benefits of music, and nurtures each student’s individual potential through classroom experiences, ensemble work, individual tuition, and performance opportunities.

Program Overview

At NEGS, we embrace the transformative power of the arts to inspire creativity, confidence and personal growth. From the earliest years, our students engage in rich musical and artistic experiences that foster imagination and self-expression. Music and the arts are integrated into the curriculum from Junior through to Senior School, with opportunities to participate in ensembles, choirs, and creative performances. The program is inclusive and designed to cultivate both emerging talent and a lifelong love for the arts.

Music Pathways At NEGS

Instrumental Music

NEGS offers a wide range of instrumental tuition through our Visiting Instrumental Program. Students may enrol in individual lessons for a variety of instruments including piano, violin, flute, guitar, and more.

Students are also encouraged to participate in instrumental ensembles and chamber groups. These experiences foster collaboration, performance confidence, and musical excellence across all levels.

Vocal and Choral Music

Vocal music plays a central role in the life of NEGS. All students in Junior School take part in choral activities, with opportunities continuing through to Senior School.

Choirs rehearse regularly and perform at school events, chapel services, and community functions. Vocal tuition is also available through the Visiting Instrumental Program for students who wish to develop their solo singing technique.

Explore the Variety of Opportunities

Students at NEGS engage with music in a variety of ways — through classroom learning, private tuition, performance ensembles, and participation in festivals and community events.

Here are some ways that our students can stay involved at every level of their music journey.

All students from Kindergarten to Year 8 participate in classroom music, where they explore music theory, music history, and a variety of practical activities. Elective music is offered in Years 9–12 and includes composition, performance, and musicology.
NEGS offers individual music tuition during school hours through its Visiting Instrumental Program. Lessons are available for a range of instruments including piano, violin, flute, guitar, and more. Students may also choose to sit AMEB or equivalent external music exams.
Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular ensembles, chamber groups, and choirs. These groups rehearse regularly and perform at events including chapel services, school concerts, and community functions.
NEGS students have numerous opportunities to perform throughout the year, including formal and informal recitals, lunchtime concerts, and music festivals. These performances help develop stage confidence and celebrate student progress.

NEGS offers Music Scholarships to students entering Year 7 and above. Applicants are required to audition and demonstrate musical potential. Scholarships offer part remission of tuition fees and provide further encouragement to talented and committed music students. For more information, visit our Scholarships Options page.
